The Black Time Travel Project | An Exploration of Black Feminist Theory & Archival Practice

During this time, people have so many private thoughts and feelings about their personal histories and our collective history. From economics, to mental health, to gentrification -- the world feels like it is changing rapidly, but somehow, staying the same. What do you do with all of these thoughts and feelings? How do you document your past, present and future?

In a series of 3 workshops, The Black Time Travel Project will explore the ways in which Black feminist thought can guide is in documenting our past, present and future experiences. These workshops will be part guided lecture, and part interactive art workshop, using papercrafts and archival methods like zine-making, collaging, scrapbooking, letter writing, and time capsule creation. No matter where you are in your practice, pull up and create with us. Creating feels better in community!

Black Girl Rising LA is a project dedicated to helping Black women and women of color in the Greater Los Angeles area use Black feminist principles to engage in art, archival practices, and wellness-related activities.  Black Girl Rising LA supports Black women and women of color in creatively reflecting on their past, present, and future.

Monthly at Sip & Sonder Inglewood.

about the workshops

Zine-Making & Collaging – Sunday January 26th

  • In this workshop, we will learn about the ephemeral archive of collaging. Sometimes we create things and they don’t last. Still, intentionally using physical materials (pen, paper, crayons), as well as mixed media (newspapers, art), can be a powerful tool for expression, communication, and mental wellness. This workshop will also be an opportunity for people who are interested in longer form expression. Zines, which are similar to personally created magazines, offer a low-tech, creative way to share their thoughts with community. Zines can provide a powerful discussion point for difficult topics, too.

Scrapbooking, Letter Writing, & Family Archiving – Sunday February 23rd

  • With this workshop, we shift from public facing content, like collages or zines, to the more interpersonal and interior ways of sharing. Many Black people have incomplete archives (the unlabeled photo album, the box of memorabilia that is unorganized and uncataloged). Here, we will talk about the importance of archiving family history, and talk about a range of strategies for doing this (scrapbooking, photobook making, audioarchiving). Participants will work on their own small plan for documenting/archiving their family history. This workshop will also focus on letter writing as a lost art. People will write letters to their friends and family. We will use beautiful art and stationery and reflect on the meditative practice of letter writing. We will discuss the importance of letters to the Black archive.

Time Capsule Creation – Sunday March 23rd

  • The time capsule creation workshop is a family friendly and fun workshop where people can think about what items they would want to save to capture this historical moment, and who they would want to share those items with (aliens, future family members, children, partners, etc.). This workshop incorporates Black science fiction and art.
